Kim Hyun Joong is nearing 28 (29 Korean age) in 47 days and already has a lengthy resume to his credit -various awards for his dance music, albums, concerts, OST, 3 and one fourth dramas (let’s include City Conquest), clothes model, beauty products, food and credit card indorser, wax figure for a Madam Tussaud’s museum. He has one year before reaching one full decade in showbiz and already his plans for career growth are in place waiting for their execution.
On the personal level he has real estate properties and chicken restaurant business, he is a certified scuba diver, soccer athlete, golf player, philanthropist, cartoonist and maybe other talents waiting to be tapped.
How did this man get this far yet has remained courteous and humble, appreciative and happy in his work?
Every dyed-in-the-wool fan of his know the story – how he loves his music but not school (not that he lacks abilities), that he left the comfort and safety of home to prove a point, took odd jobs here and there, was discovered not to be a musician but to be a dancer-singer.
He was the blacksheep of the family that made really, really good. Did he ever imagine himself, when he just started in showbiz, going this far? He is silent on that but he tells us now that there was no moment he regretted the life directions he took.
His take on this career that came to him one day was as strong as his willingness to show what he’s got. He didn’t have the tough guy nickname for nothing. What he doesn’t have yet, to learn it by hook or by crook. From singing-dancing to acting, were not God-given talents of his but skills achieved by hard work full of determination.
Can his story serve as model for those who want to heed the luring call of entertainment, the exotic and glamorous world of the stars?
His advice is to not to leave school for he has tasted the stigma of being a school dropout. He himself returned to school and finished his secondary education. Though he went on to try the university it seemed his busy schedule would not permit regular attendance. Not to worry, even the famous Steven Spielberg, director of blockbuster and multi-awarded films in Hollywood completed his course 35 years after starting college at California State University.
Hyun Joong’s path is not for the faint hearted nor those easily discouraged.
