[Pexers Write-Ups] Inspiring Generation: Kim Hyun Joong’s Make or Break Drama

How many of us knew how important Inspiring Generation drama was to Hyun Joong? Perhaps, for most of us, it is just a drama, that came after City Conquest, the almost dead, half dead or just in hibernation drama. If we were frustrated and disappointed, what more with Hyun Joong? Though he had brushed it off as an expensive practice (for him), we would have settled for any piece of work as long it is flavored with HJ essence. Okay we had BFF as some kind of appetizer. But then some are even saying he should just do a light drama, a rom com, where he can just enjoy without the usual hassles.
Did you think HJ will have gone that way? No sir, its got to be a challenging one. The harder, the better? Being Shin Jung Tae was such a demanding role that we can guess why the two other actors declined to accept it. IG was a story of love, betrayal and hardships. We didn’t suspect it was going to be an emotionally highly charged one with a lot of action where Hyun Joong did not have a double, and scenes shot in the dead of winter in different locations.
No wonder HJ’s co-stars were all praises for his fighting prowess born out of instructions taken on the set. By the way, the actor who was Old Man Fly, the most vocal of them, worked with HJ in an earlier drama, Can love Be Refilled. Though they knew his being a dancer (and athlete, may I add) gave him an advantage, still that was no easy feat of getting hit and beaten through all the fighting sequences.
Given the dual emotional and action filled aspect (from fist fighting to martial arts) of the IG drama, made Hyun Joong admit it was draining and exhausting to the point he said he cannot make it if there was an episode 25.
But more than the harsh nature of this drama was an ultimatum he placed on his acting career. “If people do not acknowledge me in this work, I am finished with acting”, he forthrightly revealed in one of his interviews. To make a long story short,IG is his make or break drama.
It was no empty threat, but he made sure he immersed fully into the Shin Jung Tae persona. Kim Hyun Joong is not someone who will sabotage his own success. KHJ had to disappear for three months that he had to find him later, when the dust he kicked around settled in IG, by breaking free of all traces of his drama character.
Was HJ satisfied with his performance? He said he exerted his best efforts of which we all have seen. There is no denying that after IG, HJ was reborn from the pretty boy to an action star.
Until the next time he sets another goal, a higher bar to reach for.
