Are wristwatches becoming a rare accessory/fixture of the human body now that cell phones and pc’s in various sizes with their multi functions have taken over? An anachronism in this age of technology advancing in unprecedented manner?
Time and schedule were important to early food gatherers, hunters, gardeners, farmers, priests and even to warriors. The sun and the moon’s positions and the shadow they created were utilized and proved to be pretty accurate by day and in particular seasons so that people can go about doing their chores.
Keeping time were important pillars of civilizations for many regions in the world particularly by the time of the industrial revolution. But wouldn’t it be more convenient if people carried their timepieces in their bodies and not on walls? However, according to wikipedia the first timepieces in Europe were pendants in the 1500’s serving as ornaments by the wealthy instead of giving time.By the time of the world wars wristwatches were functional and popular to the soldiers.
The wristwatches were also predated by pocket watches and first ran by mechanical means before quartz crystals were used. Wristwatches themselves came in different shapes and designs and became status symbols according to the makers(Rolex, Phillip Patek, Jaeger-Le Coultre among others). The watches could be made of solid gold and have diamonds in their numbers , or have simple faces and handcuffed in metal, leather, plastic, silicon straps. However, even with the popular brands fewer and fewer people are using them.
Kim Hyun Joong is one of the increasingly few who still wear wristwatches. By the looks of it he seemed to own several of them. Why he wears when he could see time on his cellphone I haven’t yet found any interview inquiring about this habit/need.
Could it be that he has received them as gifts? One watch he owned was given by Filipino fans the first time he came to the Philippines for a concert. Could it also be that he is a stickler to his schedule and wants to keep track of precious time though there are people around him all the time to remind it’s time to go to the next commitment? Is it force of habit hard to break? Does wearing wristwatches symbolize something for him? Is it just like any accessory he has learned to include in his get up?
Whatever is his reason(s) Kim Hyun Joong wears wristwatches like it’s part of his body and persona . Those wristwatches like the rest of them bear the proud history of human invention that we have began to take for granted.
