[Pexers Write-Ups] The Invisible Man
“I’ll tell you children a story.”
The children simmered down and focused their eyes on the storyteller.
“I’ll tell you the story of the invisible man. Long time ago, in a far away kingdom lived an invisible man. He couldn’t have any friends because no one sees him. He can eat all right but he is careful not to let others see the floating boiled eggs, the well done steak,or wine lest they scamper away in fright.”
” Oh, that will be neat!”, cried the oldest child in pigtails.”He can come in and go anywhere -he doesn’t have to pay for rides, he can watch all the musicals he wants for free. Cool!”
“But he cannot join in the performances, you see he is a renowned singer and dancer before he became invisible”, Auntie said with a sigh.
” I am sure he is sad watching others perform on the stage that used to be his. He also saw many of those who enjoyed his show with tearful eyes . Many times they looked at his pictures and old posters wondering why he didn’t even say goodbye, where did he go?”
“Why did he become an invisible man?”,a boy asked.
“I know,I know -he was cursed by a wicked witch,” a bubbly girl in polka dotted pyjama chimed in.
“You see a beautiful woman fell in love with him who happens to be a witch. But he is a restless man who wanted to leave the kingdom . He wanted to go and seek his fortune elsewhere. The scorned woman retaliated and casted a spell making him invisible so that he cannot be anybody even if he tried hard.”
“He became invisible slowly -first he didn’t see his hands, then his feet, his body and last his head. It was agony to see this happening a day at a time when he faces the mirror each morning.”
“The man could not persuade the witch to return him to his normal visible self instead got the advise when someone falls in love with you even without seeing you the spell will be broken”.
The man whom everyone called Marcelo, a handsome and well built man in his late twenties at first somewhat enjoyed his new freedom being invisible but later wandered around aimlessly. He saw his friends sad without him but nevertheless busy at work. His parents were also worried at his disappearance, specially his mother who was inconsolably crying most of the time.
As the days passed his boredom also increased that he decided to go to another place. He took the train, the boat, the wagon- all for free. Like a tourist he was able to do some sightseeing and visited various places. In each one he had adventures one after another in fact had fun moving things without anybody being seen moving them. Finally he got tired and thought he would settle for a while in a place called Paradise.Only that he learned the place is far from being paradise for it was filled mainly with poor people, some middle class and few wealthy families. He saw the inequality and the substandard quality of living except for the rich and the middle class who get by.
He decided to play Robin Hood by getting merchandise from the greedy merchants and distributing them to the poor. Of course this created disturbances with the merchants not willing to lose profits. They rounded up the poor who were seen enjoying the stolen goods -clothing, shoes, blankets, food, even toys for the kids. But Marcelo felt guilty the others were punished because of what he has done. Until an announcement came offering reward money to whoever can tell who the thief was.
Walking around one day he noticed a poor lame girl who besides her disability has to care for her sick father. He decided to reveal himself to her so she can claim the reward money.
She was shocked to realise there is an invisible man helping them all along. It took sometime for him to persuade her to turn him in. At last she brought him to the merchants. She carefully clothed him so he will have a human form. In the meantime the angry merchants had readied a horrible punishment for him: cut off his hands and feet. To their surprise a whole neighbourhood of the poor came-and everyone claimed to be the thief, including the girl!
While the confusion was happening,Marcelo noticed his body parts returned to being visible. Only that he has grown a beard. The spell had been broken. Not one but many loved him (move over Shin Jung Tae!). Now he realised being in another place wasn’t meant to further his ambitions but to see the poverty around him. He promptly begged for forgiveness and paid for what he has stolen. He also volunteered to do community service in the form of free entertainment. The invisible man became a very visible man in the community. The merchants affected by what had happened started to sell their goods at reasonable prices and to provide jobs for the ordinary people.
“That ‘s the end of the story kids”, Aunt said. ” Now everybody it’s time to go to bed.”
A teenager listening at a side of the room asked,”.he played Santa! Did he stay in the village for long?”
“Oh yes,” Aunt answered.” Marcelo and the girl he helped fell in love and got married.”
