Have you ever wondered what goes on inside those military gates? What seems to be the ruckus and all the civilian noises all about? There must be something sacred, secret even mysterious and encompassing that make one surrender identity or whatever one was in exchange for a rank and number.
For some countries military service is an obligation, in many others it is voluntary though encouraged with a lot of fringe benefits. The military has been granted hefty budget annually to assure nation states will and can exhibit power among its peers.
It is important to understand that the military is an institution -a close one and structured at that with its own set of rules and standards, mindset and philosophies, practices and rituals. Over the years they have resisted changes. For example in South Korea, there was a move to reduce the number of years or months of conscription or abolished its being mandatory altogether. Debates were shot down with circumstances of bombing and threats from immediate neighbour North Korea and foreign policies signed with the United States.
MS start with the welcome ceremony, regulation haircut, uniforms and the drills. Yes, Hyun Joong is no longer the kpop Hallyu celebrity but a rookie with corresponding rank and number. You can say there are levelling ways and means such as in accommodation, hours of waking/ sleeping, foods to eat, amenities, leisure activities, etc. They are given their everyday training for the standard five weeks. After which they graduate assuming all requirements had been accomplished and passed then assigned to the division they signed for-land forces, navy, airforce or civilian duties.
The 5 weeks initiate them to the military way of life and its discipline furthered and reinforced in the division they went to eventually.
There are stories leaked out that brings fears to parents, wives, girlfriends and society in general such as suicides, shooting rampages, harassment of all types some leading to death or psychological damages. The training itself could be done in hazardous and severe weather hot and sub-zero, in the DMZ or near it, all kinds of terrains and the threat of bombing can bring the soldiers to actual combat.
Celebrities can have a harder time than others or they were also said to be given special privileges. In the past there were reported abuses of the privileges which led the Military Manpower Administration to abolished them.
It used to be that employment and promotion were tied to serving one’s duties.Celebrities, however, may find it harder to go back to their former fame and fortune as two years is a long time. Due to this some celebrities have opted to finish serving when they were younger or just starting in their career rather than at its peak.
Contrary to perception that celebrities want an easier time or not serve at all if they can, some were eager to go and chose the extra challenges offered by the divisions such as the marines. MS after all had gained the reputation of making a man out of the boy.
